Getting your horse trained by a professional trainer will enhance your riding experience with your horse.

Horse Training always comes down to the basics. If things are going well, it's because your horses basics are good. If things aren't going well, it's because your horses basics aren't good. It makes no difference if you are starting a brand new colt or trying to improve your experienced competition horse, it always comes down to the same thing, the quality of your basics.

The process of training can be reduced to ask correctly, make correct and then reward. This describes the exercise-reward cycle. The exercise-reward cycle is the means by which training is accomplished.

The exercise-reward cycle describes how we present information but dose not explain how a horse accepts it. It appear that during early repetitions of the exercise-reward cycle, the horse is guessing. That is if an action fails to earn a reward, he will guess again and take a new action based upon that. Once he is rewarded , he will remember many of the incorrect guesses/actions, but he will not know which particular action lead to the reward. On each repetition of the exercise-reward cycle, the horse will make the right guess more rapidly because he is using what he learned in the preceding cycle.

Our horse training philosophy at Shenandoah Riding Center is that a good horse trainer should consider his actions and reflect upon them .
